Com port reports as being invalid

I have a serial DGT board connected to my computer on Com 1 or Com 2, but my boarddriver tells me this port is Invalid.
A very likely possibility is that the port is claimed by another program that runs on the background. A well know program that can do this is Microsofts' Active Sync for synchronisation of PDAs.
Shutting off or uninstalling such a program usually solves the problem.
