USB connection shows as COM port

I have a board with a USB connector, but still I can only choose from COM-ports like Com2, Com3 etc.

The board with the USB connector has an internal USB to serial converter. The operating system will identify this as a serial port. In most cases the text "USB" is added in brackets after the comport number, like COM3 (USB)
